Not Your Average Musical... Spring Awakening Review

Spring Awakening is not your average musical… I knew not to expect the normal song and dance routine but I wasn’t prepared for the intensity, awkward moments and relevance surrounding all the “coming of age” topics this show highlights in its 2.5hrs (think puberty, sex, pregnancy and suicide).

Rockin Rollercoaster comes to mind when I think of this show because it takes you on an emotional ride – that’s for sure. I was laughing out loud one minute and then tearing up the next. Needless to say, the talent behind this cast is remarkable. These guys are true rock stars; artists who captivated the audience with their passion and dedication to their roles.

From the get go, I fell in love with the three main characters, Wendla, Melchior and Moritz, who all had their special roles and sang some of the best songs (“Mama Who Bore Me, “Don’t Do Sadness” and “Totally Fucked”).

Warning to those with young children… there are some sex scenes (a little T&A) and mature subject matter. If you’re an art/entertainment/musical lover this is definitely one show not to be missed!

Spring Awakening will be playing at the Arsht Center through May 16!
