The Help…

It’s been a while since I’ve physically picked up a book and read it from start to finish without skipping a beat. So when I started to hear rumors of this intriguing book called, “The Help” I figured I would give it a try (truth be told, I saw the trailer for the movie and I love Emma Stone and she’s in it so…) and it did not disappoint!

Funny thing is I actually received the book as a gift last year when I attended Blogalicious (blogger conference) in Miami. I thought it was some kind of self-help book and decided I would put it on my bookshelf and come back to it at a later time. Little did I know the book was called “The Help” because it’s referring to the relationship between black maids and white women in the South back in the 1960s.

Even though I wasn’t around in the 60s, it was funny to me how I could relate to the story because my family back in Colombia all grew up with maids, yet, some of the women in my family actually worked as maids when they arrived to the United States. My parents even turned the idea of commercial cleaning into a thriving small business. So there you have my connect-the-dots.

The book focuses on the complex relationships women face when dealing with race, economic status, age and other factors, yet highlights how much we can all learn from each other and how friendships can come about even under the hardest of circumstances.

I would recommend reading the book before seeing the movie (they say the book is always better) but even if you don’t get to read it, I’m sure the movie will be fun to watch.

I read the book awhile ago and loved it!! Then I got to see the movie this weekend while at BlogHer... there were changes, yet the movie did a really good job telling the story!!

The racism during that time...very scary.
