Tacos For Strength event hosted by Mercadito

(Written by JG)

Roasted garlic shrimp tacos with octopus, scallops with shiitake mushrooms, sweet corn-serrano crema and rubbed pork tacos, and chile de ├írbol salsa. These are just some examples of what Mercadito’s cuisine has to offer. Mercadito, the upscale Mexican restaurant transplanted from NYC and Chicago, now calls Midtown Miami it’s latest home. Anyone that knows me, knows that I crave yummy food and the more creative, the better. So, you can imagine my palette’s excitement when Midtown Chica informed me that Mercadito would be inviting her (plus 1) to sample their ‘special taco’ as part of their ‘Share Our Strength’ program which invites guest chefs from all over the county to visit Mercadito to create a signature taco.

As we arrived, our waiter immediately took our drink orders. Mercadito has an extensive drink menu so not ordering one of their majestic margaritas would do your dining experience an injustice. I opted for the B.N.G.T.M. (big nose goes to mexico) margarita with herradura blanco & reposado tequila, dark rum, guava, orgeat with a fire flame coming out of your glass. No need to bring your fire extinguisher, it’s part of the show and the waiter quickly fights the flame out. Cool! Soon after, a plethora of small plates were taken out for sampling, starting with Mercadito’s famous traditional guacamole with tomatillo pico de gallo, jalape├▒o, garlic, key lime and cilantro. You can savor the fresh avocados, perfectly riped and the chips that accompany it but I loved their brussels sprouts with chorizo and roasted tomato sauce. Yes, you read it right. Those darn Brussels sprouts that your mom begged for you to eat, if she could only see you now. So proud!

Chef Andrew Balick was the guest chef for September and his signature taco had these ingredients: braised lamb shank with curried Greek yogurt , pickled minted-carrot salad and crispy shoestring potatoes. Bar none, an eruption of flavors stemming from the tenderness of the braised lamb, the refreshing sensation of the greek yogurt and the crunchy texture of the carrots and shoestring potatoes, made it my favorite taco that evening. Not only does Mercadito offer creative Mexican tacos , ceviches of all kinds and larger plates such as grilled snapper or marinated grilled skirt steak, but they have one of the best happy hours in Miami. On Wednesday’s they offer an all-you -can- drink margarita special (try the B.N.G.T.M) starting at 5pm and lasting 2 hours for $25.

Trust me, you get your money’s worth! Or go on Tuesday’s and give your palette a little break from the weekly routine, with their 2 for $5 tacos special. Mercadito is proudly participating in Miami Spice through end of September.
